About Brighton Acapella
Brighton Acapella was started by Stephen Newberry about ten years ago. In his childhood there was always music echoing round the house. The whole family played musical instruments and his brother was a chorister at King's College Cambridge. Stephen sang in his school choir for eight years, then Grantham Choral Society. In Eastbourne he sang with the Renaissance Singers, but on his move to Brighton he couldn't find a group which quite hit the spot for him. Stephen decided that meetings should be in his home rather than a drafty church hall or over a pub as it makes for a much more friendly atmosphere. He loves the popular music of the mid 20th Century with beautiful harmonies and crunchy chords and that's what we often sing. Autumn Leaves, Bye Bye Blackbird, and Moon River are a few examples. Also there are songs by Abba, The Beatles, the Beach Boys and even one song by the Back Street Boys. Serious music isn't left out entirely though, as we tackle an arrangement of Elgar's Nimrod in eight parts, and some madrigals too.
